Sentimental Fool

I was on vacation last week. My vacation actually started a day early. I normally take a week, but this time I took the Friday before as well because my best friend and her husband and daughter were driving out from Pennsylvania for the weekend. They arrived Thursday night, and we started Friday with a fun trip to the zoo with her mini-me and BFF’s hubby. Friday evening, she and I drove up to Boston to see Wicked.

I should explain, I’d seen the play three times before this, so it wasn’t new to me, but it was something I’d wanted to do for a very long time, to see it with my BFF. See, I say she’s the Galinda to my Elphaba, but the characters in the play are not just like us – while my younger life was a lot like Elphie’s as far as being a social outcast, Nichole is not at ALL like Galinda when they first meet. And yet, their friendship is still so similar to ours. We are the yin to one another’s yang, she is the light to my dark (and I think sometimes I’m the light to her dark), etc. We are so different in so many ways…and yet so alike in other ways. We both have strong opinions, feel deeply, are nerdy and quirky and creative.

There are people who come into our lives for a reason, and while it might hurt when they leave our lives, we eventually realize that the reason is because their purpose was achieved. But true friends…those are the ones that are special enough that you feel like you’ve known them forever and can’t imagine your life without them in it; in fact, sometimes it’s hard to even remember a time when they weren’t in your life.

Seeing Wicked with Nichole was a magical experience. Two best friends who probably wouldn’t have known each other if not for circumstances that we didn’t even control, a friendship that began with one of those people who came into our lives for a reason and left as soon as the purpose was achieved.

I don’t know if everyone has friendships like ours. I hope so. I never have before. My bestie is family. Sure, we have our disagreements on things, we argue, we’ve gotten angry at each other…but we always manage to find our way back “home” again. We are attached at the soul. We have seen each other at our worst and our best, have held each other up when we needed it or pulled each other back down to Earth when necessary. Sister of my soul, the Galinda to my Elphaba, the Elphaba to the Galinda in me.

FOR GOOD
LYRICS BY STEPHEN SCHWARTZ

ELPHABA

I’m limited
Just look at me–I’m limited
And just look at you–
You can do all I couldn’t do, Glinda…

[She gives Glinda the Grimmerie. Glinda: “Elphie, you know I can’t read this. Elphaba: Well, then–you’ll have to learn.]

Because now it’s up to you
For both of us–
Now it’s up to you

ELPHABA

[spoken – You’re the only friend I’ve ever had.

GLINDA

And I’ve had so many friends. But only one– that mattered.]

(sings)
I’VE HEARD IT SAID
THAT PEOPLE COME INTO OUR LIVES FOR A REASON
BRINGING SOMETHING WE MUST LEARN
AND WE ARE LED
TO THOSE WHO HELP US MOST TO GROW
IF WE LET THEM
AND WE HELP THEM IN RETURN
WELL, I DON’T KNOW IF I BELIEVE THAT’S TRUE
BUT I KNOW I’M WHO I AM TODAY
BECAUSE I KNEW YOU…

LIKE A COMET PULLED FROM ORBIT
AS IT PASSES A SUN

LIKE A STREAM THAT MEETS A BOULDER
HALFWAY THROUGH THE WOOD
WHO CAN SAY IF I’VE BEEN CHANGED FOR THE BETTER?
BUT BECAUSE I KNEW YOU
I HAVE BEEN CHANGED FOR GOOD …

ELPHABA

IT WELL MAY BE
THAT WE WILL NEVER MEET AGAIN
IN THIS LIFETIME
SO LET ME SAY BEFORE WE PART
SO MUCH OF ME
IS MADE OF WHAT I LEARNED FROM YOU
YOU’LL BE WITH ME
LIKE A HANDPRINT ON MY HEART
AND NOW WHATEVER WAY OUR STORIES END
I KNOW YOU HAVE RE-WRITTEN MINE
BY BEING MY FRIEND…

LIKE A SHIP BLOWN FROM ITS MOORING
BY A WIND OFF THE SEA
LIKE A SEED DROPPED BY A SKYBIRD
IN A DISTANT WOOD
WHO CAN SAY IF I’VE BEEN CHANGED FOR THE BETTER?
BUT BECAUSE I KNEW YOU…

GLINDA

BECAUSE I KNEW YOU…

BOTH

BECAUSE I KNEW YOU
I HAVE BEEN CHANGED FOR GOOD…

ELPHABA

AND JUST TO CLEAR THE AIR
I ASK FORGIVENESS
FOR THE THINGS I’VE DONE YOU BLAME ME FOR

GLINDA

BUT THEN, I GUESS WE KNOW
THERE’S BLAME TO SHARE

BOTH

AND NONE OF IT SEEMS TO MATTER ANYMORE

___

[They sing simultaneously]

GLINDA

LIKE A COMET PULLED FROM
ORBIT/AS IT PASSES A SUN/
LIKE A STREAM THAT MEETS A
BOULDER/ HALF-WAY
THROUGH THE WOOD

ELPHABA

LIKE A SHIP BLOWN OFF ITS
MOORING/BY A WIND OFF THE
SEA/ LIKE A SEED DROPPED BY A
BIRD IN
THE WOOD

___

BOTH

WHO CAN SAY IF I’VE BEEN CHANGED FOR THE BETTER?
I DO BELIEVE I HAVE BEEN CHANGED FOR THE BETTER

GLINDA

AND BECAUSE I KNEW YOU…

ELPHABA

BECAUSE I KNEW YOU…

BOTH

BECAUSE I KNEW YOU…
I HAVE BEEN CHANGED FOR GOOD.

Where Did the Summer Go?!

Holy crap! I haven’t blogged since last month! It’s been a sometimes crazy, sometimes fun summer.

sassi-elvisOne of my dogs, Sassi (above doing her Elvis impression), has been having seizures, so that’s been a bit stressful. She’s now on phenobarbital, which seems to have the seizures under control but has brought with it some side effects (lethargy and some coordination issues) which are starting to finally dissipate as her body adjusts to the meds.

Wicked-posterA few weeks ago, I went in to Boston with my sister and my oldest niece to see the play Wicked.

Other than the fact that it was raining, which sort of put the kibosh on our plans of spending the day wandering around the city doing some shopping and taking in the sights, it was AMAZING!

We went to FiRE+iCE for dinner, which was an experience. I wasn’t feeling all that great due to a sinus infection, but I was starting to feel much better, and by the time the play started, I was feeling great.

I can’t wait to do it again sometime soon!!!

Square_250x250Last weekend, I went to NecronomiCon 2013, the H.P. Lovecraft convention held in Providence, Rhode Island. I brought my hubby along and while he probably wasn’t that interested in most of the talks and panels we attended, he was a good sport and seemed to enjoy most of the weekend.

The con ran from Thursday through Sunday, and we went every day. It was definitely one of the funnest things I’ve ever done, and I’m really glad I went! Had an awesome time and really need to get a post written about it for Principia Esoterica!

259I’ve signed up for a Sofa to 5K program and have registered for the Monster Dash 5K in Providence on October 27. I’m determined to do this!!

Hubby and I are going to a local running shop tomorrow so I can get my gait analyzed, buy some really good running shoes, get formally fitted for a sports bra to keep my girls from knocking me out, and we’ll be good to start training next Tuesday! Yay! I’m actually psyched for this!

My brother’s girlfriend Shannon is going to come down from NH to run it with us too. No backing out now!!

wedding046-1-ddb17fSo much coming up in the near future. In addition to my fun summer and my upcoming running adventures, my BFF has gotten engaged, so there is wedding planning in my future too!

I can’t wait to get started and to share in her special day!<3

Vacation and a New Addition

Yes, it’s been awhile since I have made a post! I apologize to my one or two readers lol! First, I went to visit my BFF Nichole in Pennsylvania the weekend before last and had a blast!

k9b

I left on Thursday afternoon and took the train from Providence, RI to Philly. At right is a picture I snapped of a K9 cop on a platform in Connecticut…just because. (Haha, I thought she looked cool:)

Of course, I took an ativan about a half hour before the train got to NYC because I knew I’d have a stranger sitting beside me, and not only did I have a fat man who smelled like bologna sit in the seat beside me, but I had an obnoxious college girl slam the back of the seat in front of me into my knees. Ugh.

Nichole and her boyfriend Greg met me at the 30th Street Station and we had dinner in a restaurant there, then we caught the commuter rail to the station across from her house.

NS_smallOn Friday, Nichole and I drove to New Hope, PA and wandered through some of the shops there, had a terrible lunch at a place that shall remain nameless. But really…in a place like New Hope, you expect your lunch to be more than a previously frozen hamburger pattie, don’t you? Anyway…I bought some smelly soaps and a beautiful purple and teal pottery bowl, among a few other little things, in New Hope. That evening, we went to Skippack, which is another little marketplace type of town, and I got some really cute things in a little country crafts shop there, including a great new pair of handcrafted earrings!

mutterOn Saturday, we took the train in to Philly and visited the Mütter Museum, which I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Nichole got a little queasy when we got to the pickled punks…er…babies preserved in jars. But I went through the entire place. It was fascinating…in a morbid sort of way…which is exactly my style;)

That evening, we went to dinner and then hung out at Nichole’s house and watched a movie on pay per view. The next morning, I accompanied Nichole and Greg to Mass at their church, and then it was off to the train station (with a quick stop at Rita’s so I could get a quart of swedish fish flavored water ice), and I was homeward bound.

I realized on Friday that I had probably lost my bottle of ativan on the train ride down, so I had a few anxiety-ridden moments, but all in all, it was a great trip, and as usual, it was way too short! As soon as I got on the train, I already missed Nichole and her crew of pets and wished I could turn around and go right back!

Having spent some nice quality time with Nichole’s cat Cecil, I was reminded of how much I missed having a cat in the house…and so on Wednesday, while sitting at work on my lunchbreak, I went on Craigslist and found an ad for Siamese kittens. I picked one up that night and brought her home. Her name is Zoë, and she is sooooo sweet!

Zoë

She is a purebred Siamese, about 12 weeks old. So far, the dogs don’t know what to make of her. She has her own room for now, at least until she is big enough that the little tap of her paw on their nose will mean business enough that they’ll get the message not to mess with her. Sassi is bonding with her, so that’s good. She’s a handful…it’s been 20 years since there’s been a kitten in my house, and I’d forgotten how crazy (and fun!) they can be!

Anyway, add Mother’s Day to that, and my brother coming down this past weekend, and a fundraiser for my stepson’s Criminal Justice Society on Saturday, and suffice it to say that it’s been a busy few weeks!!! Now I really need a vacation to recover!!
